Avoid Damage to Your Precious Books
Books are valuable possessions that deserve proper care and handling. When it comes to drying books, it's important to follow the correct steps to prevent damage. Here are a few tips to ensure your books remain in optimal condition.
Lay Flat to Air Dry
After rinsing the book to remove any stains or dirt, use a clean towel to gently blot away excess water. Never wring or twist the book, as this can damage the binding and pages. Lay the book flat on a dry surface that allows for proper air circulation. Avoid placing the book directly in sunlight or near a heat source, as this can cause warping or fading.
No Agitator or Softeners
If machine washing a book is necessary, use the delicate cycle without any detergent, softeners, or an agitator. These chemicals and mechanical actions can damage the book's binding and pages. Instead, consider hand-washing the book in cold water with a mild soap solution.
Hardcover or Paperback Matters
The drying process for hardcover and paperback books differs slightly. For hardcover books, the dust jacket should be removed and allowed to dry separately. Once the dust jacket is dry, place it back on the book and gently weight it down with something flat and heavy to prevent warping.
For paperback books, gently fan the pages to allow for air circulation and prevent sticking. Avoid folding or pressing the pages together, as this can create creases.
Be Patient
